Recycle Electronics for Free by Mail

Here’s a great post from LifeHacker. Check it out.

Recycle Electronics for Free by Mail

recycle.pngRecycle your old electronics for free with the US Postal Service’s new “Mail Back” program. The program, which allows you to discard your used electronics in an environmentally friendly manner, provides free envelopes in 1,500 post offices to handle everything from inkjet cartridges to cell phones and MP3 players. The postage-paid Mail Back envelopes are located in post office lobbies, and you can take as many as you want for free. Currently the pilot program supports 10 areas, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., but could go nationwide this fall if the trial is successful. If you’re not part of the pilot program, you can still recycle cell phones, computers, and more if you know where to look.

  • CC in WMP 11

Steps to make closed captioning (CC) work in Windows Media Player 11:

    1. Download the video and CC file from Discovery Streaming to the same directory, and make sure they have the same name. The video file can be an ASF, ASX, or WMV. The CC file must be a SMI file.

    2. Open the video file you downloaded. Windows Media Player should run.

    3. Open the “Play” menu (if you do not see the Play menu, press the ALT key on the keyboard). Select “Lyrics, captions, and subtitles”, and click “On if Available”.

    4.  Open the “Tools” menu, and click on “Options”.  Select the “Security” tab.  Make sure the following boxes ARE checked:  “Run script commands when present”, “Run script commands and rich media streams when the player is in a Web page”, and “Show local captions when present”.  Click the “OK” button.

    5.  Close Windows Media Player.  Open the video file again, and it should play with captions.

Notes from Promethean Training 3 of 3

Be careful to create folders for each of your different kinds of content

Each category hold only its own kinds…

    • Collections will take everything though
    • Resource library can be moved around the screen

If you use a “magic viewer,” be sure to bring it out last so that its on the “top” layer. Otherwise right-click on it and send it to the Top. For example if you have a google map under a google earth pic. Double click on the top pic. Click on properties. And choose the “top” layer.

When you download a resource pack from Promthean Planet, be sure to pay attention to where the resources import to when you double-click on the downloaded file.  To save time, if you’ve downloaded lots of resource packs at once, don’t reindex until you’ve installed the last one.
