Disk Management

How can I get my thumbdrive or other peripherals to show up on my computer?

Disk Management:

Sometimes when you add a peripheral to the computer it doesn’t automatically show up. The directions below demonstrate how to solve this problem.

Disk management: This is a demonstration on making the computer read your thumbdrive or other peripheral if it isn’t already.

  • Plug in the Thumbdrive to a USB port
  • Right-click on “My Computer”
  • Double-Click on “Manage”
  • Double-Click on “Manage Disk Management”
  • You should see a list of items. Select the one that has the same capacity of the thumbdrive. For example if you have a 512 MB thumbdrive look for 512 MB.
  • Right-Click on it and choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths
  • A window appears that allows you to choose an alphabet for the thumbdrive. Choose “B.” And then Ok or close or something.
  • A window of options should appear. You can double click on the folder icon.
  • If no window opens then double click on “My Computer” and see if Drive B is now available.
  • In the future it should automatically read the thumbdrive as Drive B.

Internet Safety

Here are some links to great Internet safety resources.

Here’s a message from Barb Wagers the resident expert on Internet Safety.

Netsmartz is another site used by many educators. Check it out if you’ve never been there.

NetSmartz has developed Internet safety presentations for use with children of all ages and adults. Educate parents and communities with slides detailing online risks, statistics, resources, and tips for keeping children safer online. Encourage tweens and teens to examine their online behavior and take steps to prevent victimization of themselves and others. Teach younger children what to watch out for on the Internet and how to avoid these risks.

Maintenance

How can I keep my computer running smoothly?

Monthly Maintenance:

Each month (or at least quarterly) you should run the programs listed below. This will ensure that your computer does not become sluggish. This is especially important if you are working with video. Your computer will need all the resources it can harness. This process could take a few hours if you have not yet performed the operations.

WARNING: By following the procedures below, anything that you have deleted will become irretrievable.

Programs to run (Run in the order listed.)Tutorials/Resources

  1. Free up 9% – The recycle bins are typically set to take up 10% of your hard drive space. To reduce this to 1%, right-click on the recycle bin, choose “properties” and change the capacity to 1% before clicking “Ok.” How do I reduce the space the “Recycle Bin” takes up?
  2. Run LiveUpdate – The district uses Symantec’s Antivirus program to protect its computers. The virus definitions should be updated regularly. Click on the little yellow (badge-like) icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen to get started. If you don’t see the icon, click on the little arrow in the lower right-hand corner. How do I update the virus definitions?
  3. Run “Ad-Aware”: Before running, update the virus/adware definitions. Then run the program. It will find and remove adware and other malicious files from your computer. Where can I get Ad-Aware?
  4. Run “C Cleaner”: C Cleaner will remove temporary files, files in your “trash can,” as well as the Internet cache. By removing these files your computer has more space to process and save useful files. Where can I get CCleaner?
  5. Run “Disk Cleanup”: This will do much of what C Cleaner does. It will also index your files for faster retrieval.
  6. Run “Defragmenter”: Over the course of time files become fragmented. Little parts are placed in different areas of the computer. This program will bring everything back together in order for you computer to run faster. It works even better than the defragment utility that comes installed on Windows machines. Defraggler
