How can I keep my computer running smoothly?
Monthly Maintenance:
Each month (or at least quarterly) you should run the programs listed below. This will ensure that your computer does not become sluggish. This is especially important if you are working with video. Your computer will need all the resources it can harness. This process could take a few hours if you have not yet performed the operations.
WARNING: By following the procedures below, anything that you have deleted will become irretrievable.
Programs to run (Run in the order listed.)Tutorials/Resources
- Free up 9% – The recycle bins are typically set to take up 10% of your hard drive space. To reduce this to 1%, right-click on the recycle bin, choose “properties” and change the capacity to 1% before clicking “Ok.” How do I reduce the space the “Recycle Bin” takes up?
- Run LiveUpdate – The district uses Symantec’s Antivirus program to protect its computers. The virus definitions should be updated regularly. Click on the little yellow (badge-like) icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen to get started. If you don’t see the icon, click on the little arrow in the lower right-hand corner. How do I update the virus definitions?
- Run “Ad-Aware”: Before running, update the virus/adware definitions. Then run the program. It will find and remove adware and other malicious files from your computer. Where can I get Ad-Aware?
- Run “C Cleaner”: C Cleaner will remove temporary files, files in your “trash can,” as well as the Internet cache. By removing these files your computer has more space to process and save useful files. Where can I get CCleaner?
- Run “Disk Cleanup”: This will do much of what C Cleaner does. It will also index your files for faster retrieval.
- Run “Defragmenter”: Over the course of time files become fragmented. Little parts are placed in different areas of the computer. This program will bring everything back together in order for you computer to run faster. It works even better than the defragment utility that comes installed on Windows machines. Defraggler
